Slovenia (SLO)
Slovenia secured a place at what will be their 15th Men’s EHF EURO through a powerful qualifiers phase, in which they won all six games to finish on top of group 1. Slovenia’s qualification for the final tournament came after a 13th-place finish at the 2025 IHF Men’s World Championship and a historic first Olympic semi-final participation, achieved at Paris 2024.
At the previous EURO, they ranked sixth. Together with their fourth place in 2020, Slovenia’s result in 2024 made it two final weekend appearances in the three last EUROs.
However, few players who were part of the 2020 success or even the 2024 campaign remain, following some retirements post-Paris 2024, but more currently a slew of injuries having an impact. Most recently, perennial top scorer Aleks Vlah has been ruled out by a thigh injury, resulting in Borut Mačkovšek being called up at late notice after originally sitting out due to overload.
Blaž Blagotinšek, who normally forms part of Slovenia’s central defence, is also out due to overload, and a string of other top players including the likes of Miha Zarabec and Mitja Janc will also miss the tournament due to injury.
With Vlah out, pressure will be put on other shoulders. The Barça duo of right back and wing Blaž Janc and centre back Domen Makuc were both injured and absent for the 2024 edition, but are back for 2026, making up for some of the absences, particularly in offence. Vlah’s club teammate at Kielce, goalkeeper Klemen Ferlin, has been enjoying exceptional form and can be also expected to be an impact player.
The Slovenian team which will show up in Oslo are a young side with lots of talent. In a group where it appears anything can happen, Slovenia’s absences could prove detrimental, but they nevertheless enter as the on-paper frontrunners.

Domen Makuc returns to the EHF EURO after missing the 2024 edition due to injury. That same year, he was also unable to help his team at the Olympic Games and played a small role at the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4, when Barça claimed their 11th EHF Champions League title. The centre back established himself as a prominent player since the younger age category competitions, being part of the national squad that won the country’s first M20 EHF EURO title in 2018, on home ground. At the age of 17, while playing for Celje, Makuc wrote history by becoming the first player born in the 21st century to score a goal in the premium club competition.

Blaž Janc is a key attacking asset for Slovenia who can play both right wing and back. He was Slovenia’s second top scorer at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the 2025 IHF Men's World Championship. He was also named All-star right wing at the Olympics and the Men's EHF EURO 2020. Janc missed the EHF EURO 2024 through a back injury. He currently plays club handball for Barça, joining the Catalan club in 2020 from Industria Kielce, and has won the Machineseeker EHF Champions League three times — in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

The former centre back Uroš Zorman had his first coaching stint as assistant to Talant Dujshebaev at Industria Kielce — the club where he also ended his playing career. Zorman then joined Trimo Trebnje in 2020 for his first job as head coach and in 2021 took over the helm of Slovenia. His first club as a player was Slovan, and he eventually returned to the team as head coach in the summer of 2024, in parallel with his national team duties. He contributed to Celje’s 2003/04 triumph in the EHF Champions League with 30 goals, and later on lifted the trophy with Ciudad Real and Kielce.
