The EHF EURO 2024 winners are back, and they are on a mission to defend the title. The first trophy in the men’s team history since the Tokyo 2021 Olympics was a nice farewell for Nikola Karabatic and for some of the players who contributed to France’s achievements throughout the years.

Now, things are a little bit different, as both Nikola Karabatic and goalkeeper Vincent Gérard have left the national team and handball altogether.

But that does not mean that France are without assets when the time for the EHF EURO 2026 arrives, though. Head coach Guillaume Gille has been slowly but surely incorporating new players in the past two years. Centre back Aymeric Minne, left back Thibaud Briet and goalkeeper Charles Bolzinger have taken on more responsibilities since the end of the Olympic Games 18 months ago.

If you add these players — who, for the most part, play in the EHF Champions League with their clubs every season — to the likes of Dika Mem, Nedim Remili or captain Ludovic Fabregas, you end up with a team that most opponents would not want to face.

This new wave of French handball stars led the national team to the bronze medal at the 2025 IHF World Championship. And while the semi-final loss against Croatia in Zagreb may have left a long-standing impression, France actually only lost one half in the entire competition.

Will that be enough for Les Bleus to win the EHF EURO for the fifth time in history? During the EHF EURO Cup, which they won flawlessly, France proved that they are ready for another shot at the title, but some fierce opponents await in the preliminary round.

Competition records:
Number of EHF EURO participations, including 2026: 17
Gold: 2006, 2010, 2014, 2024
Bronze: 2008, 2018

Star right back Dika Mem rose to success from an early age, debuting for Barça in 2016 at age 19, then for France a few months later. Following France’s achievement in 2024, Mem completed the hat-trick of major titles with the national team, winning gold at the EHF EURO 2024, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2017 IHF World Championship. With his club, he conquered three EHF Champions League titles — in 2021, 2022, 2024 — and has become one of the main goalscorers for the side, while also taking over the role as captain in 2023/24. His strong performances led him to three All-star Team nominations in the premium club competition and to the EHF Excellence Award as the best right back of the 2023/24 season.

One of the most experienced players in Guillame Gille's squad, Ludovic Fabregas, has completed a hat-trick on both national team and club level since his debut in 2015, winning the IHF World Championship in 2017, the Olympic Games in 2020, and the EHF EURO in 2024. The EHF Champions League titles arrived in 2018, 2021, and 2022, but it's also his individual accolades that go hand in hand with team awards. France's ace from the six-metre line has been named the best line player at the 2020 Olympic Games, EHF EURO in 2024, as well as the 2021 and 2023 World Championships. Fabregas is also the only player named best in one position at each edition of the EHF Excellence Awards — three seasons straight starting in 2022/23 when he played for Barça, where he returned in summer 2025 from One Veszprém.

Head Coach

Guillaume Gille

Guillaume Gille replaced Didier Dinart at France’s helm in 2020 after previously featuring as his assistant for almost four years. He led France to the trophy in 2024 and became the first person to win the EHF EURO as both a player — in 2006 and 2010 — and a coach. During his playing career, he appeared in more than 300 matches for France and scored over 650 goals, while also securing medals at every major international competition with the side. Gille also played alongside his brother Bertrand, the 2002 IHF World Player of the Year, in both his club and national teams.
