Denmark (DEN)
The reigning world and Olympic champions are on a mission to finally return to the European throne after a 14-year wait with the help of their passionate supporters, as Denmark are ready to co-host an EHF EURO for only the second time in the country's history. With the co-hosts qualifying automatically for the final tournament, the dominant Danes featured in the EHF EURO Cup 2026, finishing in second place, losing out to the European champions, France.
EHF EURO 2026 will be Denmark's first European championship in years without the legendary trio of Niklas Landin, Henrik Møllgaard and Mikkel Hansen. Subsequently, one of, if not the, best coaches in world handball, Nikolaj Jacobsen, was tasked with conducting the inevitable transition period over the past year. However, with the likes of Emil Nielsen, Simon Pytlick and Mathias Gidsel among many other talented young players in the ranks, Denmark look capable of another golden decade at the very least.
The two-time European champions and current silver medal holders have not lifted the EHF EURO trophy since the 2012 edition of the tournament, and the gold medal is the main goal for Jacobsen's star-studded squad in Herning. The pain of losing the EHF EURO 2024 final in dramatic fashion is an additional motivation for the co-hosts to at least replicate their success in Germany, but first, Denmark need to progress from group B.
With the world and Olympic titles already in the bag, plus the presence of current IHF World Player of the Year — Gidsel — in their ranks and all the other world-class talent around him led by Jacobsen, the confident and electric Denmark are once again the team to beat at EHF EURO 2026 and are the favourites to go all the way, lift the trophy in front of their fans and complete the golden quest in uniting all the major trophies at once.

It is no easy task following in the footsteps of Niklas Landin, but Emil Nielsen has successfully taken over the role between Denmark’s posts. Part of the Danish squad since 2018, Nielsen gained more attention after his performance at the EHF EURO 2024, where he had the highest save rate of the competition at 39.49 per cent. He was also crucial to Denmark’s fourth consecutive world title in 2025, becoming the best goalkeeper of the tournament with 125 saves at 43 per cent efficiency and being included in the All-star Team. And his list of achievements keeps on growing — he was the top goalkeeper in the EHF Champions League 2024/25 with 183 saves and won three trophies at the EHF Excellence Awards. Nielsen has been guarding Barça’s goal since 2022 and even celebrated winning the top flight with the side in 2024.

Regarded as the best handball player of the moment, with current back-to-back IHF World Player of the Year awards, Mathias Gidsel is certainly a main asset in Denmark’s gold chase in 2026. Gidsel made his debut for the national team in 2020 and has since added several important achievements to his name — including Olympic gold in 2024 and three World Championship trophies. He was the top scorer of the last four national team competitions and also has numerous MVP awards. On a club level, he has been playing for Füchse Berlin since 2022 and celebrated winning the EHF European League with the side in 2023. He topped the EHF Champions League 2024/25 standings with 135 goals, when Füchse reached the final.

After playing as a left wing and featuring for clubs such as GOG, Bayer Dormagen and THW Kiel, Nikolaj Jacobsen had his first head coach role with Danish side Aalborg, between 2012 and 2014, then moved to Rhein-Neckar Löwen and led the team until 2019. Simultaneously, he took over as head coach of Denmark in 2017 and soon entered his first major competition with the side, the EHF EURO 2018, finishing fourth. His signing marked the beginning of a new and successful era for Denmark’s men’s handball team, and Jacobsen steered his star-studded line-up to a record-breaking four World Championship titles in a row (2019, 2021, 2023, 2025). Before his coaching career, he was named Danish Handball Player of the Year twice, in 1993 and 1999. In 2023, Nikolaj Jacobsen was inducted into the EHF Hall of Fame.
