Czechia have become regulars at the EHF EURO. Since 2008, they only missed the 2016 edition. The national team might not count on a star such as their former player Filip Jicha, but that does not mean they are not able to impress at the European level.

In fact, Czechia won one game in each of their last four participations, qualifying for the main round in 2020 and even playing the fifth-place match in 2018. So, expect them to give France and Norway fierce opposition in Oslo/Bærum in January.

Coaching duo Daniel Kubeš and Michal Brůna took over from Xavi Sabate in January 2025, and picked up exactly where the Spanish technician left off. And the method seems to be working so far, as Czechia finished second in their qualifiers group, behind Croatia, but with four victories over Belgium and Luxembourg.

In these games, a young and talented generation showed up. Former THW Kiel goalkeeper Tomáš Mrkva is the most experienced member of the national team, and the only one with more than 100 international games played. But a few other members of the squad have gone to the Bundesliga, such as Leipzig right back Tomáš Piroch and his club partner Matěj Klíma.

These so-called “older” players surround a young generation which, for the most part, still plays in Czech clubs such as Plzen and Karvina. Some of them might make it to the bigger stage in a few years, but for now, they will try to shine at the EHF EURO 2026.

Nothing seems impossible for Czechia right now, as the team took four victories during the EHF EURO 2026 Qualifiers, and even put on a great fight in round 3 against Croatia, losing by only six goals (35:29), a campaign which gave them even more hope ahead of the final tournament.

Key Players

Tomas Mrkva
Goalkeeper

With 139 matches played — as of December 2025 — since his national team debut in 2009, Tomáš Mrkva is Czechia’s longest serving player. He recorded an average save rate of over 36 per cent at the EHF EURO 2024 and is now entering his sixth European Championship. Mrkva won the Czech league with his first club, Banik Karvina, then continued his career in Germany playing for ASV Hamm, Frisch Auf Göppingen, Balingen-Weilstetten and Bergischer HC. After three seasons at THW Kiel, between 2022 and 2025, the Czech goalkeeper joined SC DHfK Leipzig.

Tomas Piroch
Right Back

The 2026 edition will be Tomáš Piroch’s third consecutive EHF EURO and his fourth major tournament overall, after also playing for Czechia in the 2025 IHF World Championship. He made his official debut for the team in 2019 and has since featured in 49 games, counting 123 goals ahead of the EHF EURO 2026. Two years ago, at the previous edition, Piroch was the third best scorer for the side with 10 goals. Piroch’s club career includes stints at Talent Plzen in Czechia, Melsungen in Germany, Plock in Poland, Créteil in France and Kriens-Luzern in Switzerland — with his best international season in 2024/25 while playing for Plock, having scored 56 goals in the EHF Champions League. He has been part of SC DHfK Leipzig’s squad since 2025, alongside national teammates Matej Klima and Tomáš Mrkva.

Head Coach

Daniel Kubeš

Daniel Kubeš returned to Czechia’s helm in 2025, after a previous stint with the side between 2014 and 2021 alongside Jan Filip, and he is now sharing the coaching role with Michal Bruna. Kubeš spent many years leading two German clubs, Nordhorn-Lingen and Emsdetten, before signing as head coach of Dukla Praha in 2024. A former player himself, Daniel Kubeš counted more than 140 games for the national team of Czechia, featuring primarily as a defensive specialist. His greatest achievements during his playing career were winning the EHF Cup in 2010 with Lemgo and the EHF Champions League in 2012 with Kiel.
