Munich

Munich is the capital of Bavaria. With 1,488,202 inhabitants it is the most populous city in Bavaria, the third-largest municipality in Germany and with 4790 inhabitants per square kilometre the most densely populated municipality in Germany. The city forms the centre of the metropolitan region of Munich (around 6.12 million inhabitants).

Munich calls itself a cosmopolitan city with a heart and is considered as a centre of culture, politics, science and media. It is the headquarters of numerous corporations, including Allianz, BMW, Munich Re, Siemens and MTU. In the 2018 global ranking, Munich took third place out of 231 major cities worldwide in terms of quality of life.

Munich was first mentioned in documents in 1158 and became the sole capital of Bavaria in 1506. Munich is the seat of numerous national and international authorities as well as important universities and colleges, high-level museums and theatres.

The city is an attraction for international tourism due to a large number of buildings worth seeing, including UNESCO-protected monuments and ensembles, international sporting events, trade fairs and congresses as well as the world-famous Oktoberfest or the Hofbräuhaus and the Olympic Park.

Handball history: The Olympic Hall was the scene of the first Olympic tournament in indoor handball in 1972 and hosted a round group at the 2019 IHF Men's World Championship. The arena is known for its great atmosphere during handball matches. The venue also hosted numerous international matches and the Super Cup of the Handball Bundesliga. In January 2024 the handball history of Munich will continue: the Olympic hall will be of the German venues for the Men's EHF EURO 2024.

Dominik Klein, World Champion 2007 and three times EHF Champions League winner: „Bavaria can play handball“ was the motto of the IHF Men's World Championship 2019 in the Olympic Hall in Munich, and the event was a huge success. Why should it go wrong when a big international handball event returns to the arena in 2024? I am sure that everyone in Munich will be thrilled, not just Munich, but throughout Bavaria, when the European handball teams show great games in this historic venue.

FANZONE in Munich

A typical Bavarian beer garden and a pub cellar await the fans in Munich. In the traditional Bamberger house, around 25 minutes' walk from the Olympic Hall, handball fans can experience all of Bavaria's culinary specialties. The preliminary round games will be shown in the Brauhauskeller (brewery cellar) from 10 to 16 January, and the fan zone is open daily from 16:30 CET. to midnight. If you want, you can try your hand at curling outside for a fee.

Who plays in Munich?

The Bavarian capital Munich will host two preliminary round groups for the Men's EHF EURO 2024 - groups C and F. The Olympiahalle will host eight great teams: in group C those are Iceland, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro while group F is headlined by two-time EHF EURO champions Denmark, Portugal, Czech Republic and the debutants Greece. 

The first group to take the court in Munich will be group F on 11 January with matches between Portugal and Greece at 18:00 and Denmark versus Czech Republic at 20:30. Iceland and Serbia will open the competition in group C on 12 January also at 18:00 followed by the clash between Hungary and Montenegro at 20:30. 

Matches of the preliminary round in Munich are played from 11-16 January 2024 at 18:00 and 20:30. All times are local.
