Austria are one of just three teams – alongside France and Portugal – who came through the Men’s EHF EURO 2024 Qualifiers with a perfect record of six wins from six matches. Head coach Ales Pajovic's team will need to be at their very best again for the final tournament in Germany, where they face the likes of two-time champions Spain and three-time runners-up Croatia in the preliminary round. Their tough group is completed by Romania, an opponent Austria have already met – and beaten – twice in the qualifiers.

The 2024 edition marks Austria’s fourth straight appearance at the EHF EURO. Their debut came when they hosted the event in 2010 – but since then, Austria have failed to qualify only two times. Their fortunes at final tournaments have been varying: three times, Austria made it to the main round; in 2022, however, they suffered three straight defeats in the preliminary round and finished in 20th position – their worst result at a European Championship. The same year, they faltered in qualification for the 2023 IHF World Championship.

Still, a closer look at Austria’s squad gives them every reason to be hopeful for EHF EURO 2024. At age 27, team captain Nikola Bilyk, an EHF Champions League winner with THW Kiel, has arrived in the prime of his career; and the same goes for 28-year-old left wing Sebastian Frimmel, a key asset for OTP Bank - PICK Szeged who has grown into a more important role in the national team, too. Also, a new generation of talented players has become an integral part of coach Pajovic’s team – most notably 23-year-old Lukas Hutecek, who can play left or centre back and who became Austria’s top scorer at the 2021 IHF World Championship only one year after his debut in the national team.

Key Players

Sebastian Frimmel)
Sebastian Frimmel
Left Wing

The tall (1.9m) wing Sebastian Frimmel is one of the acknowledged stars of the Austrian team. He has scored over 300 goals in more than 80 previous appearances for the national team, including 22 at the EHF EURO 2022. Frimmel made an early impact with bronze at the School World Championship in 2013, and made his senior national debut aged 18 in 2014. He was named ‘best young player’ of the Austrian league in the 2014/15 season. Frimmel joined OTP Bank-PICK Szeged in summer 2021, and to date has scored more than 160 goals in the EHF Champions League for Szeged and Kadetten Schaffhausen combined.

Mykola Bilyk)
Mykola Bilyk
Left Back

Mykola Bilyk is key to Austrian success. He was the team’s top scorer with 46 goals at EHF EURO 2020, but then had a leave of absence after a severe knee injury. He made his national team comeback in November 2021, top-scoring in a test match against Czechia. Bilyk was born in Tunis, where his father Serhij was a goalkeeper at Esperance; they later played together at Vienna’s Fivers club. The back was the youngest player at the IHF Men’s World Championship 2015 in Qatar at the age of 18, and had offers from both Barça and THW Kiel after the tournament. He chose Kiel, joining them in 2016 and going on to win the EHF Cup in 2019 with the club.

Ales Pajovic)
Ales Pajovic

Ales Pajovic steered Austria to their best-ever EHF EURO rank in 2020, when they finished eighth. He was appointed to the role in March 2019, succeeding Icelandic-born Patrekur Johannesson, and came from his first coaching role at Austrian club Graz. Prior to coaching, Pajovic played 181 matches for the Slovenian national team and was a master of defence in his active career. He won silver with Slovenia at EHF EURO 2004 and was a three-time winner of the EHF Champions League with Ciudad Real.
