In global competitions, Denmark have been the team to beat lately, with three straight world titles and two consecutive appearances in the Olympic final — but the EHF EURO trophy has eluded the Scandinavian nation during what has been arguably the decorated side’s most notable period of success.

Denmark came close to the top of Europe in 2022, returning to the EHF EURO semi-finals after a shock 2020 campaign that saw their lowest ranking ever. In 2022, Denmark lost to then reigning champions Spain in the semi-final before defeating France in extra time to clinch third — the national team’s seventh EHF EURO medal and 16th across all competitions.

Denmark have taken the EHF EURO title twice, in 2008 and 2012. The bronze in 2022 was their first medal in the competition since silver in 2014. Prior to their first EHF EURO trophy in 2008, Denmark placed third three straight times.

On an individual level, Denmark are in the strong position of having big quality players competing for positions in the squad and almost unrivalled depth on the bench. Led by stalwart stars Mikkel Hansen and Niklas Landin, Denmark also keep unveiling newcomers with immediate impact.

At the World Championship held in January 2023, one year prior to the EHF EURO 2024, Simon Pytlick had his breakout national team tournament, ranking fourth on the top scorer list and earning a place in the All-star Team. Prior to Pytlick, it was one of the biggest stars in the game: Mathias Gidsel. Since his debut at the 2021 World Championship, Gidsel has not missed one All-star Team at a national team competition and was named MVP of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Pytlick was sidelined with an ankle injury through the end of 2023 but is expected back for the EHF EURO 2024.

Key Players

Niklas Landin Jacobsen

Goalkeeper

Niklas Landin is the current captain of the three-time world-title winning Danish national team. He succeeded legendary goalkeeper Kasper Hvidt after breaking onto the scene at the IHF Men’s World Championship 2011. Landin was elected best goalkeeper at the 2013 and 2019 world championships, EHF EURO 2014 and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; named IHF World Player of the Year 2019; and was All-star Team goalkeeper for the EHF Champions League in 2014, 2016 and 2020. After eight years at THW Kiel, Landin moved back to Denmark to join Aalborg Håndbold at the start of the current season and is currently one of the top four goalkeepers in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League 2023/24.

Mikkel Hansen

Left Back

Mikkel Hansen has not missed an EHF EURO since his major tournament debut in 2012. He was named EHF EURO All-star left back four times, in 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2022. Hansen left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of 2021/22 to join Aalborg, although he missed much of the 2022/23 season due to mental stress. He has played the EHF FINAL4 five times for Barça, Kobenhavn and PSG, but is yet to lift the trophy – however, Hansen holds the record for the most EHF Champions League goals in a season, having scored 141 in 2015/16. He is the son of former Danish international Flemming Hansen, and started his career at GOG.

Head Coach

Nikolaj Jacobsen

Nikolaj Jacobsen took over the coaching position for Denmark in 2017, while he was still a coach for Rhein-Neckar Löwen. In his first major tournament as the national coach, Denmark finished fourth at the EHF EURO 2018 before winning world championship gold. A former left wing, Jacobsen played for THW Kiel from 1998 to 2004 before moving back to Denmark to end his career. He was twice elected Danish player of the year, in 1993 and 1999.
