Since Glenn Solberg was appointed as the coach of Sweden men’s national team in 2020, their consistency has been nothing short of amazing. Sweden finished second at the 2021 IHF Men’s World Championship, fifth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, won EHF EURO 2022 and ended up fourth at the 2023 World Championship. Those results represented a great turnaround from a disappointing performance at their home EHF EURO 2020.

Solberg has been shaping a strong team with a strong core of players led by stalwarts like Jim Gottfridsson, Hampus Wanne and Andreas Palicka, who came of age more or less at the same time.

At the EHF EURO, no team has won more titles than the five-time champions Sweden. Only Spain (nine medals) and Denmark (seven) have featured on the podium more times than the Scandinavian side. But with a target on their backs after securing the trophy two years ago, Sweden will be once again one of the main favourites.

A mix of experience and the exuberance of youth from players like Eric Johansson will likely fuel the fire for Sweden once again. They will be heavily favoured to start EHF EURO 2024 with three wins out of three matches against the Netherlands, Bosnia Herzegovina and Georgia.

Next, tougher clashes against strong sides like Denmark might await. But Sweden made the semi-finals twice in the last three editions of the competition, and are one of the teams with the best winning efficiency in the European championships, having won 60 out of their 96 matches played.
