Norway (NOR)
Exactly 10 years ago, at the EHF EURO 2016, Norway stormed the handball world, reaching the semi-finals of the competition, but they were eliminated by future champions Germany after overtime. While they reached the finals at the 2017 and 2019 IHF World Championship and won bronze at the EHF EURO 2020, things have not been as good lately. In 2024, the adventure stopped in the main round for Sander Sagosen and his teammates — they finished second to last in their group, taking only two wins, against the Netherlands and Sweden.
Some of the core players of this golden generation will still feature at the EHF EURO 2026. Sander Sagosen looks like the obvious leader, with goalkeeper Torbjørn Bergerud, left wing Sebastian Barthold and right back Harald Reinkind appearing as stalwarts.
But now is the time for coach Jonas Wille to succeed at blending all these experienced players with the young Norwegian generation. Talented players such as Tobias Grøndahl, Simen Lyse and Andrè Bergsholm Kristensen have been giving impressive performances in the EHF Champions League lately, deservedly making it to the national team.
But it would seem like the team’s chemistry remains to be found. Norway finished last at the EHF EURO Cup 2026, with six defeats, against France, Sweden and Denmark. While some good team performances could be witnessed over short periods of time in these games, there is still a lot to work on.
In front of 9,000 fans at the Unity Arena in Oslo/Bærum, Norway will have the opportunity to progress to the main round. But aiming for the final weekend will be a whole new matter, as some key players will miss the tournament due to injuries. However, these absences might give young players the opportunity to shine as bright as they do in club competitions every week.

Torbjørn Bergerud debuted for the national team in 2013, aged only 19, and has since played in 165 matches for Norway — as of December 2025. He delivered an elite performance at the EHF EURO 2020, saving the most shots out of all goalkeepers (90) and playing a key role in Norway’s first and only medal at the event. Bergerud has been a regular appearance in European club competitions, playing for top clubs such as SG Flensburg-Handewitt (2018–2021), GOG (2021/22) and Kolstad (2022–2025) before moving to Orlen Wisla Plock in 2025. He excelled in his last EHF Champions League season with Kolstad, becoming the fifth-ranked goalkeeper in number of saves, with 140.

Ahead of the 2026 edition, Sander Sagosen is still the record holder for most goals scored at a single EHF EURO, with 65. A long-standing member of Norway’s national team, having made his debut in 2013, Sagosen has become a key player for the squad, and was the driving force in the country’s medal run from 2017 to 2020 — securing one EHF EURO bronze and two silver medals at the World Championship. His repeated outstanding performances brought him several personal awards during his career, including being nominated in the All-star Team at five consecutive national team championships (from 2016 to 2020). Sagosen left Kolstad in February 2025 to return for his second stint at Aalborg, after his previous run with the Danish side between 2014 and 2017.

Before taking over the helm of Norway in June 2022, Jonas Wille was an assistant coach to Christian Berge for less than a year. He has extensive experience on a club level with both men’s teams — IFK Kristianstad, Mors-Thy, Skövde, HC Midtjylland and Halden Topphåndball — and women’s sides — HK Halden, Stabæk, Fjellhammer. During his stint with Halden, in 2018/19, Wille was named coach of the year in Sweden. Former Swedish handball player Martin Boquist is his assistant at the national team.
