Montenegro travel to the Men’s EHF EURO 2026 on the back of their most successful qualifiers campaign ever. 2014 was the last time they took more than three wins in the stage. The path to the 2026 edition saw them record four victories, one draw and just one defeat, which secured their spot as the second-ranked side from group 2, behind Hungary.

Although Montenegro did not qualify for the 2025 World Championship, having lost to Italy in the play-offs, the strong EHF EURO 2026 Qualifiers showing is reflective of a steady upward trajectory for the side. They have played every edition of the EURO since 2014, returned to the World Championship in 2023 after a 10-year absence and had notable EHF EURO campaigns in 2022 and 2024.

After placing 16th out of 16 sides three times in a row from 2014 to 2018, then 18th at the first edition with 24 teams in 2020, Montenegro jumped up to 11th in 2022 and 14th in 2024. That 11th place marked their best final tournament campaign, with two wins in the preliminary phase and one in the main round.

In 2024, they were extremely unlucky — playing in one of the closest preliminary round groups in the tournament’s history, three goals made the difference, with a defeat of two to Hungary, a one-goal loss to Iceland and a one-goal win over Serbia putting them on two points that could have easily been as many as six. With that, Montenegro were knocked out of the competition in a brutal way.

Now, led by head coach Didier Dinart in his first tournament with the side, Montenegro hope to return to the main round from a competitive group.

One blow for Montenegro is the absence of their highly impactful goalkeeper Nebojsa Simic, who is sidelined after surgery. However, the core of the squad remains intact, with key shooters like wing Milos Vujovic and back Branko Vujovic in good form.

Milos Vujović is currently the most experienced player in Montenegro’s squad, with 71 caps and 195 goals as of December 2025. The left wing stands out as one of the team’s main assets ahead of the EHF EURO 2026 — his seventh participation at the event — following his previous performances. He netted 41 times in 2022 and earned his nomination in the All-star Team, while in 2024 he had by far the most court time of any Montenegro player, scoring 13 goals. Vujović transferred to VfL Gummersbach after a previous three-year stint with Füchse Berlin, which brought him the EHF European League title in 2023, when he scored a career high of 75 goals.

Currently at his fourth straight EHF EURO appearance, Branko Vujović is undeniably one of Montenegro's main assets in attack. An efficient shooter, Vujović led the team through the qualifiers for both the EHF EURO 2024 and 2026 as the top scorer for the side. At the previous final tournament, Vujović netted 15 times in the three games played, becoming second ranked in the team. His best achievement arrived in 2015/16 — his debut EHF Champions League season — when he lifted the trophy with Kielce. He continues to play in the premium club competition after joining the Romanian side Dinamo Bucuresti in 2024.

Former defensive specialist Didier Dinart had an illustrious playing career, conquering all major titles with France — the EHF EURO (2006, 2010), Olympic Games (2008, 2012) and World Championship (2001, 2009, 2011) — while also boasting four EHF Champions League titles. He started his coaching career as assistant to Claude Onesta with the France men’s team from 2013 to 2016, then led them as head coach until 2020. Dinart has been steering US Ivry since 2023 and in parallel joined Montenegro in 2024; the EHF EURO 2026 marks his first major tournament with the side. His standout career brought him the induction to the EHF Hall of Fame in 2023.
