Faroe Islands (FAR)
Two years ago, the Faroe Islands were capturing hearts on their major tournament debut at the Men’s EHF EURO 2024. With thousands of Faroese flocking to Germany for the occasion, following what was already a memorable qualification for the event, the Faroe Islands’ matches brought both atmosphere and spectacle. Most notable in their first major championship campaign was the late draw secured against the more experienced side of Norway. While the Faroe Islands’ record of one draw and two defeats — one of which was against their EHF EURO 2026 group opponents Slovenia — meant they bowed out after the preliminary round and ranked 20th, they left an indelible impression on the handball world.
What gives the Faroe Islands an edge is the world-class level of the leading stars and the link between the players, most of whom are of similar age and have been on court together for many years. Star backs Elias Ellefsen a Skipagøtu and Óli Mittún are even cousins.
Skipagøtu, wing Hákun West Av Teigum and goalkeeper Pauli Jacobsen were leading players as the Faroe Islands won the Men’s 17 European Open 2019, all making the tournament’s All-star Team. Skipagøtu, who was named 2023 IHF Young Male Player of the Year, and West Av Teigum were the side’s top scorers at the EHF EURO 2024. The two now ply their trade with German powerhouses — THW Kiel and Füchse Berlin.
Mittún, who, at 20, is a few years younger than the other squad leaders, was MVP at the 2025 Junior World Championship, where the Faroe Islands won their first medal at such a level.
Qualifying for the EHF EURO 2024, the Faroe Islands had a thrill ride and a three-way points tie that ended in their favour. On the way to the 2026 edition, the Faroe Islands showed they continue developing at an astounding pace, as they finished on top of the group 6 table to comfortably clinch their second major tournament participation.
