Two Füchse Berlin players are among the stars of the Serbian team, which has had to endure several setbacks in recent years: goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev and defensive giant Mijajlo Marsenic. The Serbian squad also includes players from top international clubs such as goalkeeper Vladimir Cupara and winger Darko Djukic from Machineseeker EHF Champions League participants Dinamo Bucuresti; line player Dragan Pechmalbec from One Veszprém HC; Nemanja Ilic of Fenix Toulouse; and backcourt shooter Lazar Kukic of OTP Bank - PICK Szeged.

Nevertheless, after their sensational European silver medal on home soil in Belgrade in 2012, the national team struggled, going through numerous coaches. At the EHF EURO 2024, Spaniard Toni Gerona was still in charge, but he was later replaced by Boris Rojevic, who himself was dismissed in November 2024.

In the decisive EHF EURO Qualifiers in March and May, 2012 silver medallist Dalibor Cutura served as interim coach, although he is actually the junior national coach. Now Spaniard Raul Gonzalez is at the helm. Gonzalez was previously the long-term coach of Paris Saint-Germain and led HC Vardar 1961 to the 2017 Champions League title. His preliminary squad list includes many experienced players such as Ilija Abutovic, who are part of the team since more than a decade.

Since winning silver in 2012, Serbia have failed to achieve a top-10 finish at a European championship. In 2024 in Germany, they failed to reach the main round and finished 19th. Serbia missed out on World Championship qualification four times (2015, 2017, 2021 and 2025).

Their 2026 qualification campaign began with a fortunate win against Latvia, followed by a loss to Italy — then came a win and a defeat against Spain, and only with a 28:24 victory over Italy on the final matchday did the Balkan side secure their European Championship ticket as group runners-up.

Key Players

Nemanja Ilic
Left Wing

Serbia’s most experienced player, with 140 matches and 397 goals for the national team, Nemanja Ilić debuted with the side in 2014 and is now heading into his sixth EHF EURO participation. Ilić has been part of FENIX Toulouse’s line-up since 2013 and has been named the All-star left wing of the French league twice in a row, while also claiming the top scorer award with 202 goals in 2022/23. Ilić has a younger brother, Vanja, who also plays as left wing.

Mijajlo Marsenic
Line Player

Serbia’s asset in both attack and defence, Mijajlo Marsenić played his first game with the side in 2012 and is currently on 298 goals scored in 130 matches. His best achievement was winning the EHF Champions League with Vardar in 2017. Later on, he added another trophy to his name — the EHF European League 2022/23 while playing for Füchse Berlin. During his club career, Marsenić was also part of Partizan Belgrade, with whom he became Serbian champion and Cup winner, followed by a stint at Metalurg Skopje. The Serbian line player is currently in his eighth season with Füchse Berlin.

Head Coach

Raul Gonzalez

Spanish coach Raul Gonzalez joined as head coach of Serbia in the summer of 2025 and is heading into his first championship with the side. After starting his coaching career as assistant to Talant Dujshebaev at Atletico Madrid and Ciudad Real, Gonzalez had his first stint as head coach at Vardar between 2014 and 2018 — during which he steered the team to their first EHF Champions League title in 2017. He also gained experience as head coach of North Macedonia (2017–2019) and Paris Saint-Germain (2018–2025), before accepting the challenge with Serbia. As a former player, he won EHF EURO silver and Olympic bronze in 1996, recording 55 goals in 57 matches for Spain.
