Andrea Sedloska: Wearing the Macedonian jersey with pride

“I would say the qualifiers for the Women's EHF EURO 2024 were a significant coming-of-age moment for me. This experience has helped me grow as a player and build my confidence. It taught me the importance of teamwork and perseverance, and I'm excited to carry these lessons forward into the tournament," says Sedloska.

The Macedonians finished 16th at the Women’s EHF EURO 2022, which they co-hosted. For 2024 they are in the tricky group A alongside Sweden, who finished fourth at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games; tournament co-hosts Hungary; and debutants Türkiye.

"Being placed in group A alongside Sweden, Hungary, and Türkiye presents both exciting challenges and opportunities. Sweden are known for their strong, disciplined play and have a well-rounded team. They have a solid defence and can be very effective in transition. I expect this match to be highly competitive, and we'll need to stay focused and play smart to keep up with their pace,” Sedloska predicts.

“Hungary has a rich handball tradition and is always a tough opponent. They have passionate fans and play with a lot of intensity. We'll need to match their energy and stay resilient throughout the game. I believe it will be crucial for us to establish our rhythm early on.

“Türkiye has shown significant growth in recent years and can be unpredictable. They have some talented players who can change the course of the game quickly. We'll need to be prepared for anything and stay adaptable. Overall, I expect each match to be a challenge, but we're determined to give our best performance and aim for positive results in all three games," analyses Sedloska.

Despite the tough competition, the HC Lokomotiva Zagreb left back is optimistic about the final outcome of group A and sees the matches as an opportunity to improve and grow, both from an individual and collective point of view.

"I believe our chances of progressing from the group phase to the main round are quite strong. We've been working hard in preparation, and we have a talented and motivated team. If we focus on our game plan, play with confidence, and support each other on the court, I'm optimistic about our ability to secure the results we need. Each match will be crucial, but we're ready to give our best effort and fight for our place in the main round," she says.

With Debrecen being relatively close to Sedloska’s homeland, quite a few fans are expected to travel to Hungary in order to support the Lionesses.

"The support from the stands has a tremendous impact on our motivation. Macedonian fans are known for their passion and unwavering loyalty, and it truly energises us on the court. Knowing that they are there, cheering us on, creates a powerful atmosphere that boosts our confidence and drive,” Sedloska says.

“When we hear their chants and feel their support, it reminds us of the pride we carry as representatives of our country. It motivates us to give our best effort and fight for every point. We're excited to have them with us in Debrecen, and we hope to make them proud with our performances," adds Sedloska.

The Macedonian national team will be one of, if not the youngest at the upcoming European Championship with only a few players over the age of 30 and a host of young players in their ranks. Despite being only 21 years old, Sedloska brings experience of playing in European club competitions with Zagreb.

"Being part of a young national team is both exciting and rewarding. It brings a fresh energy and enthusiasm to our squad, and I think it's a great opportunity for all of us to grow together. With only a few players over 30, there's a strong sense of determination among us to prove ourselves on the international stage.

“It's important to create a supportive environment where everyone feels confident to express themselves and contribute. I believe that together, we can build a strong foundation for the future of our team," says Sedloska.

Sedloska comes from a family with rich sports history as her father Goce Sedloski was an eminent former footballer with 100 appearances for the Macedonian national team. He is now a coach.

When asked about how her father's career influences hers and about whether she feels a burden or pressure to reach her father's achievements, Sedloska explains: "Having a father like Goce, who has had a prominent career as a Macedonian football player, means a lot to me. It's a source of inspiration and pride, knowing that I come from a family with a rich sports legacy.

“His dedication and achievements motivate me to strive for excellence in my own career. While there is certainly a level of pressure to live up to those expectations, I try to view it as a positive challenge rather than a burden. I use that motivation to push myself to improve every day and to honour the legacy of my family while carving out my own path.

“I want to be a strong representative for the Macedonian national team and contribute to our success on the international stage. My father's journey reminds me that hard work, perseverance, and passion can lead to great things, and I aim to embody those values as I continue my career."

The sky-high ambitions echo through Sedloska's words and when asked to pick her favourite player, she is torn between two women.

"One of my favourite players is Andrea Lekic. Since I started my own career in handball, I have always looked up to her. Watching her play every match during her time at WHC Vardar in Macedonia inspired me immensely. Her skill, determination, and leadership on the court made her my idol,” she says.

“Currently, my biggest idol and role model is Bruna de Paula. I admire her style of play and her ability to perform under pressure. She embodies the qualities I aspire to develop in my own game, including hard work, dedication, and resilience. Both Lekic and de Paula serve as fantastic examples of what it means to be a top-level athlete, and they motivate me to push myself further in my handball journey."

Sedloska hopes that journey will take her to the top at both international and club level. She predicts a bright future with the Macedonians being ever-present at major championships in the future.

"I see the Macedonian national team on an upward trajectory in the near future. With a strong foundation of young talent emerging, there's a lot of potential for growth and success. The players are gaining valuable experience both domestically and internationally, which will only enhance their skills and teamwork,” she thinks.

“Our coach, Kristijan Grchevski, plays a crucial role in this development, providing guidance and instilling a strong work ethic and tactical awareness in the team. His leadership and vision help shape our strategy and foster a positive team environment. As the team continues to develop its cohesion and adapt under his guidance, I believe we can expect improved performances in upcoming competitions.

“Overall, I'm optimistic about the team's future and excited to see how we will evolve in the coming years. I see a very promising future for our national team. With our blend of young talent and experienced players, I believe we have the potential to make significant strides in European and World competitions. I am committed to working hard and developing my skills, and I do imagine myself as a key player who can help lead the team to the next level," concludes Sedloska.
