Veszprém claim record win over PSG; Barça hold off Szeged comeback
Round 2 of the Machineseeker EHF Champions League 2024/25 ended Thursday evening with title holders Barça surviving an impressive comeback by OTP Bank - Pick Szeged. After a 20:12 half-time lead, the Spanish champions had to settle for a narrow 31:30 home win. Elsewhere, SC Magdeburg downed Kolstad Håndbold 33:25 following a dominant performance.
Earlier Thursday, Veszprém HC took a stunning 41:28 victory over Paris Saint-Germain Handball – the biggest winning margin in any of the 17 duels the two powerhouses have played against each other. In the other early game, Sporting CP steamrolled Fredericia Håndbold in Denmark: 37:19, the biggest ever win in Europe's top flight for the Portuguese club.
It is an amazing feeling to play in this arena when the team performs so well; we will need the fans even more when things do not go as smoothly. We played an absolutely incredible match today, even though we were only leading by three goals at half-time, we put fantastic handball on display. Everyone did their assigned task and we managed to keep Luc Steins under control. Everyone showed today how much they are willing to fight for this club.
It was a great feeling to return to Veszprém, it feels well how the fans welcomed me. Unfortunately, I cannot say much about the match, we did not play good and we can only blame ourselves for this large-scale defeat. If we do not improve, we will not have much of a chance, either in the Champions League or in the domestic league.
Sporting were clearly the better team today. I’m disappointed in our performance. We didn’t even come close to what we are capable of, and that is frustrating. We made far too many technical errors, especially in the first half, and we never really found our footing. Sporting punished us for every mistake, and we just couldn’t respond. It’s not the standard I expect from this team, and we need to take a hard look at ourselves and correct these issues quickly.
Today was one of those rare days where I felt completely in the zone in goal. Everything just seemed to go our way, and it was one of my better performances. The difference between the two teams isn’t normally as big as it looked today. We spent a lot of time preparing for this match, breaking down FHK’s strengths and focusing on our defensive structure, and it really paid off.
We know how difficult this group is and were determined to win. Apart from one phase in the second half, we played very convincingly and deserved to win.
It was nice to be here again. Playing in Magdeburg as a guest is very difficult and SCM deserved to win the game.
