SUMMARY: Derby wins for Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia and Portugal
Round 3 of the Men's EHF EURO 2024 Qualifiers got underway with eight matches on Wednesday, and eight more games on Thursday featuring the round's Highlight match between Switzerland and Hungary.
The EHF EURO Cup also continued, with Denmark celebrating against Germany, after Sweden beat Spain on Wednesday night.

After the opening win against Spain, and a loss to Sweden in the second round, Denmark has in a dominant fashion managed to reach a new EHF EURO Cup win. Thomas Sommer Andersen led them with seven goals, while Lukas Lindhard Jorgensen added five. Emil Nielsen and Simon Gade combined for 17 saves stopping over 43% of shots heading their way. Juri Knorr led Germany with five goals.

Just under ten minutes into the second, Denmark seems to be cruising towards a new win in the EHF EURO Cup. The team led by Nikolaj Jacobsen is leading 21:14 with Thomas Sommer Arnoldsen leading them offensively, and Emil Jakobsen shining between the posts.

In Serbia, hosts have managed to reach an important win over Norway in front of their amazing fans, also prolonging their winning streak. Starting from 19.00 CET, we have two more group derbies coming up including the highlight of the round - the encounter between Switzerland and Hungary in Schaffhausen. It's going to be a tough challenge for the hosts facing the best attacking team of the competition so far. On the other hand, they surely won't lack motivation as these are their first EHF EURO Qualifiers in 15 years (2008) that they've managed to open with two wins in a row.
Speaking of records, a home win for North Macedonia over Portugal would mean that coach Kiril Lazarov and his guys have managed to even their record five-game winning streak in the EHF EURO Qualifiers. It is however easier said than done, especially when facing the second-best offense of the competition led by coach Paulo Pereira.

In derby clashes of the groups 2 and 7, Norway is leading against Serbia and Montenegro is levelled with Slovenia after the first 30 minutes. Dejan Milosavljev is having a great night between the posts for Serbia so far, while Kristian Bjørnsen and Magnus Abelvik Rød are leading the guests offensively with three goals each.
In Podgorica, Slovenia has after a poor start managed to level the game before the half-time buzzer. Jure Dolenec and Aleks Vlah were leading the comeback, while Nebojsa Simic on the other hand already has seven saves next to his name.
In Finland, Slovakia is two goals ahead at the break, and in Estonia hosts are leading by four.

Norway will in Serbia look to break their own record of consecutive EHF EURO Qualifiers victories, that dates all the way back to the period between 1995-1997. Serbia is, on the other hand, looking to basically the same thing as they are currently riding a record four-game winning streak in the competition.
In the derby match of the group 7 between Montenegro and Slovenia, we'll see former Croatian national team goalkeeper Vlado Sola in his debut on the Montenegrin bench. However, his job will surely be far from easy facing the second-best defensive team of the EHF EURO Qualifiers so far.

Coming up we have seven more Men's EHF EURO 2024 Qualifiers round 3 games coming up. Starting from 18.00 CET we'll see derby encounters in group 2 and 7 with Serbia hosting Norway, and Montenegro welcoming Slovenia. Both Italy and Latvia have unveiled their squads for today's game. Latvian superstar (and super-tall) Dainis Kristopans is not playing - how critical that will be for the visitors will be seen later. Both teams lost their first two matches so at least one will pick up their first points today.

The highlight of today's action promises to be the highlight match, which sees group 6 leaders Switzerland and Hungary meet.
And one player who's bound to make an impact on court is Switzerland's Andy Schmid. The veteran is preparing to take on the role of national team coach, but not until June 2024. Before then, he has an aim to lead his side to the EHF EURO as a player. EHF journalist Björn Pazen caught up with Schmid before today's game to find out how he has reached this point, and his hopes and dreams for the side.
This is quite a sensational win for us against today's favourites from Romania. This is yet another step in the right direction for Faroese handball and we will keep adding the layers to a solid competitive team.

The first match of the double-header between Czech Republic and Iceland sees the home side come out on top after a superb performance. Czech Republic now count the maximum six points in their account, following three straight wins in the qualifiers, while Iceland stay on four points.

It's a first victory of the EHF EURO 2024 Qualifiers for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as they defeat Kosovo at home. The visitors therefore move up to third place in group 7, behind Slovenia and Montenegro, who play their round 3 match on Thursday.

Greece hold Belgium off to secure the two points away and move up to four points on the group 5 table, alongside the Netherlands and Croatia.

First points of the EHF EURO 2024 Qualifiers for Faroe Islands, and first victory ever against Romania. Romania won all five previous encounters with an average margin of 14 goals in their favour, making it a very special result for Faroe Islands as they heat up the race in group 4.

We also have a tight battle unfolding in Belgium, where the home side are behind Greece by just one goal, 18:19, nearing the final 15 minutes of the game.
Both teams are targeting their first berth in the EHF EURO, after Belgium made their debut at the World Championship in January. Belgium put their country on the global handball map at the World Championship, taking a memorable win and progressing to the main round.
Interestingly, Belgium have a poor home record, with losses in the last 10 home matches in the EHF EURO Qualifiers. The most recent home victory was in June 2013 against Ireland. Simultaneously, Greece have a poor away record, with only one win in the last 14 away matches in the qualifiers.

11 minutes on the clock in Faroe Islands and it's a close one, at 23:21 for the home side as Romania chase. If Faroe Islands take the victory, it will be only their second ever in this stage of the qualifiers. Their first came in the EHF EURO 2022 Qualifiers, in what was their second participation in phase 2.
A win for the home side here will also throw group 4 wide open, as all four teams would then hold points in their account — a situation that exists in no other qualifiers group so far.

The Netherlands record their first win ever against Croatia and with that take their points tally to four on the group 5 table, joining their visitors as the leaders.
Of course, this victory was for Cemal Kütahya, our captain, who died in the terrible earthquake. All our minds were with him. It was difficult for us to play today, but we started well, then we had many problems after the break. Luxembourg could have won the match, but finally we are happy that we were victories. Now we have two points and we want to get two more on Sunday in the re-match to secure the third position.

10 minutes played in Luxembourg and Türkiye have control at 5:1, mainly thanks to three saves from goalkeeper Taner Günay. Taner sits on a whopping rate of 75 per cent at this point in the game, and has clearly opened the door for his team to create an advantage at the other end of the court.
Over in Poland, the home side have reduced the distance a little, but only a little — it's 34:26 to France with seven minutes to go. It seems the current Olympic champions have the two points all but locked up. Wing Dylan Nahi has reached an enormous 10-goal tally, while right back Dika Mem now counts six in his account.
In the EHF EURO Cup clash in Sweden, it's a low-scorer so far, with right back Imanol Garciandia levelling at 2:2 just before the eight-minute mark. He has scored both Spain's goals, and his direct counterpart on Sweden's left back, Eric Johansson, has netted both the Scandinavian side's goals as well.

This is a rematch of some big games still fairly fresh in memory, including the final of the EHF EURO 2022 and more recently the bronze-medal game at the January World Championship. Sweden won the EURO final, while Spain took the bronze medal on Sweden's turf in Stockholm, 39:36.
Overall, the teams have met 29 times before, with Spain winning 14 games and Sweden 15.
So far in the EHF EURO Cup, Sweden have won both games — against Denmark and Germany — and Spain have won one, versus Germany.

It is a sombre moment for Türkiye, who are playing their first official match since the devastating earthquake in early February. The team lost their captain Cemal Kütahya in the earthquake, along with Kütahya's family.
Alongside his role as captain of the indoor team, Kütahya was captain of the beach handball national team and the top scorer at the 2019 and 2021 Beach EUROs. He reached over 150 caps for Türkiye overall.

It's crunchtime for Poland now — if they are to dig themselves out of this deep hole, it's time to start, so the next minutes are crucial as the home side target a comeback.

It's not looking good for Poland as we near the end of the first half — with six minutes to go before the break, the home side trail 10:17.
France wing Dylan Nahi and back Dika Mem are the leading scorers of the game, with four goals apiece — and Mem at a rate of 100% accuracy.
France have a far higher shooting percentage in general, with a rate of 76 per cent to Poland's 52 per cent. At this point, Poland have missed 10 shots.

Both teams enter the game with two wins from two games so far, which means some first points are set to be dropped in this clash. France are on top of group 8, just ahead of Poland, due to goal difference.
The teams met very recently, for the opening game of the Men's World Championship in January, with France taking a 26:24 victory. France reached the final for the eighth time overall, taking the silver medal after losing the trophy game to Denmark, while Poland ranked 15th.
In the overall mutual history between the two, France have won eight times in 14 games — notably, six of the last seven matches.

Since the last round of the Men's EHF EURO 2024 Qualifiers, several teams played at the 2023 IHF Men's World Championship. Denmark secured another crown there, ahead of France and Spain on the podium.
Now it's time for the 32 teams hoping to secure a spot at the next big international tournament to resume the fight for places, in round 3 of qualification. A number have changed coach after the world championship - could that shake up the form books? We'll find out over the next couple of days.
