Valencia, Spain – Host city of Men’s EHF EURO 2028

VALENCIA

PRELIMINARY/MAIN ROUND/FINAL WEEKEND

Valencia, located on Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast, is the country’s third-largest city and one of its most vibrant cultural centers. Known for its sunny climate, long beaches and lively urban life, Valencia blends centuries of history with bold modern architecture. The city’s wide avenues, historic quarters and waterfront districts reflect a place where tradition and innovation exist side by side.

Valencia’s origins date back to 138 BC, when it was founded as a Roman colony called "Valentia". Over the centuries, the city was shaped by Roman, Visigothic and especially Islamic influence, which left a lasting mark on its urban layout, agriculture and culture. After the Christian reconquest in the 13th century under King James I of Aragon, Valencia became one of the most important cities of the Crown of Aragon and a major center of trade and culture in the Mediterranean.

Tradition plays a central role in Valencian life. The city is internationally famous for "Las Fallas", a spectacular festival held every March in which enormous artistic sculptures are displayed in the streets before being burned in a symbolic celebration. Valencia is also the birthplace of paella, one of Spain’s most iconic dishes, which reflects the region’s agricultural heritage and its close relationship with rice cultivation.

In recent decades, Valencia has also become a symbol of architectural innovation. The City of Arts and Sciences, designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, represents the city’s modern spirit and commitment to science, culture and creativity. Together with its historic cathedral, bustling markets and vibrant seaside atmosphere, Valencia offers a unique blend of past and present that continues to attract visitors from around the world.
