EHF EURO
Summary: Montenegro shock; Spain, Denmark & France still perfect
The main round will throw off at 15:30 CET in both Bratislava and Budapest as teams look for a route to the semi-finals.
This match was amazing. We dream big and we play an interesting handball with so much energy. We started to celebrate already on court, giving each other strength and even more energy by screaming after all little success.
Poland and Norway are producing a fast-paced match, with the two teams boasting 48 attacks between them in the first 30 minutes. The writing was on the wall since the start of the game, when Norway’s fast throw-offs confused Poland’s defence, as the Scandinavian side scored easy goals. Poland's defence are unable to stop Sander Sagosen, who reached the 150-goal mark at the EHF EURO by scoring eight times in the first half. Sure, handball can throw a surprise or two even when everything looks lost, but Poland will have a mountain to climb now.
Spain were never expecting an easy match against Germany, but they have truly got a tough game on their hands. Germany exuded team spirit in this game and really took the game to the reigning European champions. Eventually, though, Germany’s turnovers got the best of them and a 4:1 run handed Spain the lead. And, once again, it was the defence who lifted 'Los Hispanos', as Germany scored only once in the last nine minutes and 43 seconds of the first half. Despite the big turnover in their roster after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Spain are still a very, very strong team.
Before the match it looked like the Netherlands would face quite a challenge in the form of their main round opener opponents, Olympic champions France, and early on that looked to be the case. But as the clock has ticked on the Netherlands have really found their feet and we go to the break with a competitive game on our hands. Of note is the fact that France have naturally focused their defence on the Netherlands’ key backs Luc Steins and Kay Smits — and while it has been effective in keeping them quieter than usual, other players have stepped up and we are seeing that the team is more threatening in attack all round than some might have thought.
Well, Russia, who are undefeated, might be in serious trouble. They are down at the break for the first time in this tournament. Glenn Solberg urged his back players to shoot more from the 9-metre line and Jim Gottfridsson took the message to heart, scoring twice in the first half. But Sweden still relies on fast breaks and their excellent wings, with Hampus Wanne and Valter Chrintz combining for half of their team’s goals in the first half against Russia.
One team has got nothing to lose, one has got everything to lose, and it clearly shows on the court. Montenegro are making the most of their main round presence, having fun and playing with absolutely no pressure at all. As a consequence, they clearly have the upper hand, backed up by a strong defence. Their six-goal advantage might be a little overrated, but they now have a good security ahead of the second half.
