EHF competition history

Key Players

Key Players

Sebastian Frimmel

Left wing

The tall (1.9m) wing Sebastian Frimmel is one of the acknowledged stars of the Austrian team. He has scored over 200 goals in 75 previous appearances for the national team, including 21 at EHF EURO 2020. Frimmel made an early impact with bronze at the School World Championship in 2013, and made his senior national debut aged 18 in 2014. He was named ‘best young player’ of the Austrian league in the 2014/15 season. Frimmel joined Pick Szeged in summer 2021 and is the club’s top scorer to date in the EHF Champions League 2021/22, with 36 goals.

Mykola Bilyk

Left/centre back

Nikola Bilyk is key to Austrian success. He was the team’s top scorer with 46 goals at EHF EURO 2020, but then had a leave of absence after a severe knee injury. He made his national team comeback in November 2021, top-scoring in a test match against the Czech Republic. Bilyk was born in Tunis, where his father Serhij was a goalkeeper at Esperance; they later played together at Vienna’s Fivers club. The back was the youngest player at the IHF Men’s World Championship 2015 in Qatar at the age of 18, and had offers from both Barça and THW Kiel after the tournament. He chose Kiel, joining them in 2016 and going on to win the EHF Cup in 2019 with the club

Head Coach

Ales Pajovic

Coach

Ales Pajovic steered Austria to their best-ever EHF EURO rank in 2020, when they finished eighth. He was appointed to the role in March 2019, succeeding Icelandic-born Patrekur Johannesson, and came from his first coaching role at Austrian club Graz. Prior to coaching, Pajovic played 181 matches for the Slovenian national team and was a master of defence in his active career. He won silver with Slovenia at EHF EURO 2004 and was a three-time winner of the EHF Champions League with Ciudad Real.
