Lithuania (LTU)

The last time Lithuania reached the final tournament of the EHF EURO, coach Mindaugas Andriuska was just starting his career, while other crucial players in the current team were just a few years old.

After a 24-year wait, Lithuania are back in business, delivering on the promise Andriuska made when he was appointed in 2019 that he would lead the side to an international competition.

The path has been rocky and Lithuania are by no means a powerhouse, but they still boast a group of players that have been together for a long time. They also have plenty of international experience, including backs Jonas Truchanovicius, the only Lithuanian player to win the EHF Champions League, with Montpellier in 2018, or Aidenas Malasinkas, who has been a mainstay at HC Motor in the past seasons.

Emerging players like Zanas Gabrielius Virbauskas, who was the top scorer in the EHF EURO 2022 qualification phase 2, with 24 goals, will definitely help, but the overall lack of depth could be troublesome, especially in the crunch moments of the games.

Lithuania won only one game in history at the EHF EURO, therefore the need to start strongly is essential. They won only two games in qualification phase 2, but if they play again as they did when beating Iceland 29:27 they could spring a surprise or two this time around.

Key Players

Jonas Truchanovicius

Left back

Jonas Truchanovicius was named male Lithuanian Player of the Year in 2020, before scoring 15 goals in qualification phase 2 for EHF EURO 2022. One of very few Lithuanians to feature in the EHF Champions League, he became the first Lithuanian to win it, with Montpellier, in 2018. A towering presence, at 2.03m, Truchanovicius has a powerful shot and can feature both as a left back and as a centre back. He played for Dragunas Klaipeda until 2015, winning five Lithuanian titles; then he spent one year in Austria, at Leoben, before moving to Montpellier and then HC Motor in 2021.

Centre back

At 35 years old, Aidenas Malasinskas will make his debut for the national team at a major tournament, after being key in qualification phase 2 and scoring 22 times in four matches. The centre back was named male Lithuanian Player of the Year in 2015, 2017 and 2019. He is also the all-time top scorer for Lithuania, with 418 goals. Malasinkas joined Motor in the summer of 2015 and quickly became a key part of the team; he has now scored over 450 goals in the EHF Champions League, including 47 in the 2021/22 season. He started out playing for Lusis and Granitas-Karys in Kaunas, but moved abroad to Spain in 2011, where he played for Granollers and Logrono La Rioja.

Coach

Mindaugas Andriuska was Arturas Juskenas' assistant until 2019, but took over after the team failed to qualify for EHF EURO 2020. A former national team player, who scored 132 goals in 72 games for Lithuania, Andriuska became a coach immediately after retirement, taking over his last club, Austrian side ULZ Sparkasse Schwaz. At 42 years old, he is the second youngest coach at the EHF EURO 2022, after Slovakia's Peter Kukucka, who is 39. He has plenty of international experience as a player, having plied his trade in Denmark, Iceland and Austria, but has never been at a final tournament with Lithuania.
